Members Restoration Projects

Many of these beloved bikes have been saved from the skip by dedicated indivaduals who decide to bring them back to their former glory and take on the enjoyable task of restoring them. I get lots of people ringing me every week asking for the smallest part to finish off their restoration project from the indicator lens to the ignition barrel. So if you have done a project restoration send me in some pictures with some text and we can put them up on the site for everyone to enjoy.

 DITCH FIND Honda C70 1981& Honda Cub 90 1985

I picked up these couple in  Co Meath thanks to Brian for helping me get them out these bikes would have been sent to the scrapyard or soon rotted away if they had not been salvaged.

If you know of a bike in a ditch give me a call on and I will pull it out for you.

Aidan & Paul sent us this one from Cork Great to hear stories of the auld Chicken Chaisers being pulled out of ditches and getting restored nice to see.

Dear Philip,

I understand that you were talking with my nephew, Aidan, this afternoon about the possibility of restoring a Honda 50.  The carcass in question is not just any Honda 50, but my Honda 50 that I rode for four years as a student and which holds many memories.  We were reunited today after being apart for 19 years.  The bike dates from about 1980.

As you will see from the attached, the poor bike is in sad shape after lying for nearly two decades outside under a tree and covered with brambles.  About the only salvagable bits are the frame (which will need some work) and handlebars and it needs a new engine, transmission, wheels, brakes, shocks, leg guards, seat, electrics, stand, etc. etc.

I would appreciate any advice you might have and I would be interested in buying parts (in particular Aidan told me you might have a suitable engine available.  We're from Cork but I think we might be able to get the bike to Limerick.

Best wishes and thanks,

Paul

PS: Great website; it was what gave me the idea to track down my bike!

Hi Paul,

Great to hear from you I am delighted that you have saved this bike it is great to see another Honda 50 pulled from a ditch.

It would be best for you and Aidan to restore this bike for the simple reason it is not that hard and you will get great satisfaction when you get on her again to go for a spin.

Where do you start ?

Get a can of WD40 spray all the nuts and bolts a few spanners and start stripping the bike photograph this as you go along so you know how it goes back together (you dont need to take the front or back forks off the bike) label and box all the parts you will need them again.

When you have the bike totaly stripped I would recommend getting it sand blasted and resprayed this should only cost you around 50.00 euro for the sandblasting & between 100.00 - 150.00 euro for the sprayjob for the bike you have I would recommend toyota super red 2 this would be the nearest colour to your bike or you can get it colour matched if you want best place is Halfords for the spray.

Your wheels dont look that bad give them a good clean with a brillo pad they should come up ok.

Make out a list of parts and come up to Limerick and I will have all the parts for you when you are ready.

Best of luck with your project keep in touch.

Regards,

Philip.

Brian has sent us this one from Sligo.

Philip,
Here is a project i finished not long ago.Its a 1990 c90 which i picked up for small money and in need of some tlc. I completely stripped the bike, down to steel frame (everything out-engine,loom etc). I had the frame sandblasted and primed while i sanded all plastic parts. All was painted in a bake oven by local car crash repair garage in sligo (thanks david for brillant job). New parts included chrome indicators, cables, headlight, tyres and some more (thanks to gordon roundtree of dromahair.
The re-assembly was a dream.i tested all electronics from brake light switch to fuel gauge and reset the clutch.God bless the Haynes Manual (bikers bible) End result was a bike better than new.
My other bike is a blue 1986 C70 in mint condition with custom racing exhaust and filter, sounds awsome and goes like crazy.my pride n joy.
I just picked up a 1995 C90 for restoration.Plans include custom respray in honda civic green with 7 spoke white rims i sourced in japan.Pics will follow when complete.

Joe has sent us this one from Indiana USA

Dear Sir,

Attached please find photographs of my 1969 Honda C-50.

I (mis) used it for 10 years and then the devil went into storage.
Last year, 2008 my younger son, a student at Purdue University, Indiana, USA, started the project of restoration.
All plastic parts had to be replaced, engine overhauled, new tyres, new carburator. However the paint is still the original one.
We managed to find all the parts in the local market, the only exception being the speedometer / neutral indicator bulbs, cannot seem to find them anywhere over here.

I do hope the attached photos will find place in your web pages.
With best regards,
Joe
