Q. What do I need to do to renew my Full Driving License? A. You will need to fill out the D401 form - Full License renewal form. This can be obtained from your local Motor Tax office. You will also need two passport photos signed on the reverse by yourself, a fee of €25 for a 10 year license, €15 for a 3 year license or €5 for a 1 year license. Send all of the above to your local Motor Tax office along with your old license.

Q.How do I know which license category I need to drive my vehicle? A. A list of the license categories and the vehicles to which they apply are set out on this website.

Q.How long may my full license have expired before I would have to resit the driving test? A. Ten years.

Q. I changed my name on marriage. What should I do to amend my license? A. You should complete an application form (D.401 Full license or D.201 Learner permit) and forward it to the Motor Taxation Office with your original Marriage Cert. and two passport-type photographs (signed on back). No fee will apply (if license is still current).

Q. Please explain the category A (motorcycle) restriction? A. Anyone granted a first learner permit in category A on or after December 17, 1999 is restricted to driving motorcycles with an engine power output not exceeding 25kw or a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kw/kg. This restriction applies for the duration of all learner permits and for two years after taking out a full license (not two years from date of test).

Q. How do I know if my motorcycle falls within the restriction limits? A. Manufactures and suppliers will advise on the power outputs of individual motorcycles.

Q. I have a 1000cc motorcycle. May I drive this with a restricted license? A. Yes but only if a restrictor kit is fitted. Restrictor kits may be fitted to motorcycles exceeding the restriction limits to make them compliant for the duration of the restriction.

Q. I have a provisional category A license since October, 1999. Does the restriction apply to me? A. No, provided you do not allow your learner permit to lapse for more than five years.

Q. I want to apply for my first learner permit category B license. I have not applied for any license previously. What should I do? A. First of all you will have to sit and pass the Driver Theory Test. Secondly; you must have an eyesight report completed by an Optician or your Doctor. You may then apply to your Motor Taxation Office enclosing your Birth Cert. or Passport or Certificate of Registration, Driver Theory Test Cert., Eyesight Report, two passport-type photographs (signed on back), a completed application form D201 and a fee of €15.

Q. I am applying for my first learner permit in category A. I hold a full license in category B. Can I apply for my test in category A once I get my first learner permit? A: No. Persons who are granted a learner permit for vehicles in category A, A1, M, W, B or EB and have not previously held a learner permit in the five year period prior to the granting of such a permit in any of these categories may not apply for a driving test within the period of 6 months from the day the permit comes into force,

Q. I hold a second learner permit in category B. Can I drive unaccompanied? A. No. After June 30th, 2008 all Learner permit holders in respect of the categories B, EB, C1, C, D1, D, EC, EC1, ED & ED1 must be accompanied at all times by a person who holds a full driving license in the category for a continuous period of two years.

Q: I hold a provisional license which is due to expire soon, I will be renewing it on expiry; will the learner permit I receive be considered a first time learner permit? A: No, as you already held a provisional license you are not considered to be a first time learner permit holder.

Q: I have a category A Provisional that expired more than five years ago. Does the restriction apply to me? A. Yes it does. Where a provisional or a learner permit has expired for more than five years the next learner permit issued in that category is considered a first learner permit and the restriction must be applied.

Q. When I am granted my full license and the two year restriction period has passed may I drive any size motorcycle I wish? A. Yes.

Q.I have a full B (car) license. Does this entitle me to drive a motorcycle? A. The holder of a category B license granted prior to 21 October, 2006 is entitled to drive a moped up to 50cc with a maximum design speed of 45 km/hour. All category B licenses granted, for the first time, on or after 21 October, 2006 do not hold this entitlement. Such license holders wishing to drive a category M vehicle would have to obtain a learner permit in category M and successfully undergo the practical driving test in order to obtain a full license in this category.

Q. I have a learner permit A license. May I carry a passenger? A. Learner permit holders in Categories A, A1 or M are not permitted to carry passengers.

Q. I hold a full B driving license and also hold a learner permit in category C. Can I drive unaccompanied on my learner permit C license as I hold a full B license? A. No. You must be accompanied at all times on a learner permit by a qualified driver who holds a full license in the category for a continuous period of 2 years.

Q. I have a learner permit B license. May I tow a trailer? A. No. Learner permit holders in categories B, C1, C, D1 or D may not tow a trailer.

Q. May I tow a trailer on my full B license? A. Yes, provided (1) the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle and the combination does not exceed 3500kg or (2) the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer does not exceed 750kg If you wish to tow a heavier trailer you will have to apply for a category EB license.

Q. I have held two learner permits. How do I qualify for a third? A. Any application for a third or subsequent learner permit must be accompanied by either of the following:- (a)evidence of having undergone a driving test in the vehicle category in question in the two year period prior to the application. (In this case a two year learner permit will be granted) (b) Evidence of having applied for a driving test in respect of the vehicle category in question. (In this case a one year learner permit will be granted).

Q. I hold a full B license and want to apply for a first learner permit motorcycle license do I have to sit

the driver theory test? A. Yes, unless you already submitted a theory test certificate that entitles you to apply for a learner permit in categories A, A1 or M. Your Motor Taxation Office will advise you further. From 21 October 2006 there will be four categories of Driver Theory Test as set out in column 1 below and will entitle persons to apply for first learner permits in the license categories set out in Column 2 opposite as follows: COLUMN 1 Theory Test Certificate Category
